How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”
-The Sign of the Four“An ancestor of mine.”
So now we’re all left wondering …
(a) how Amanda Greyson is related to Sherlock Holmes
…or else…
(b) who among SH’s ancestors or descendants (?!) marries a Vulcan.
…”My brains hurt.”
Not to be a total party-pooper, but maybe Spock is related to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
May have to try this with the orange kitty when I get home - she’s been sitting/laying on stuff that she probably shouldn’t be.
Nerd Rant Time!
This Nerd Rant is for high-level nerds only - any non-nerds may sustain serious injury attempting to parse the nerditry that lay within. You have been warned!
Recently, the developers behind the soon to be free Star Trek Online game made it known that they would be including some “energy based melee weapons” in a free update to the game this week. Energy based melee weapons being a clunky way of saying “light sabers” without actually saying “light sabers” because, well, “light sabers” belong in Star Wars and not Star Trek.
As you have hopefully been able to suss, I’m a bit of a Trekkie. I’m also a huge gamer, and have a lifetime sub to STO. So, this news distressed me a little when I first heard it. I even had a lengthy Twitter conversation with one of the Devs.
The whole idea of mixing ST and SW is, well, not something I’m comfortable with. They are totally different franchises with totally different rules and outlooks and, well, everything. The idea of having the single most iconic thing from Star Wars in a game which exists primarily to allow people to pretend to be in Star Trek is a bit hard to swallow.
Unless it’s rationalized away. Rationalization is my mutant power, so here goes:
The Iconians had a vast empire millenia ago, powered mostly by their gateway technology. These gateways allowed instantaneous transit between any two points in space - regardless of distance, as long as enough power was provided.
It’s known that the Iconian homeworld was bombed from space, but what is unknown is why such an advanced race wouldn’t be able to either evacuate before their own destruction, or erect strong enough shielding to protect their buildings. Any species that can travel across the galaxy as easily as walking between rooms really shouldn’t have any issue with basic shielding technology.
No, they had to know it was coming, and they had to have escaped - and where better to than somewhere far, far away from those that opposed them? Somewhere they couldn’t be followed?
Another galaxy.
It stands to reason that their survivors would be curious about what was left behind, and what the state of this galaxy would be after their departure - as well as the status of any abandoned gateways. So, it’s not too big a stretch to imagine one or two coming through occasionally, armed of course. Armed with whatever weapons they may have handy.
Like, say, laser swords.
Is this a perfect explaination? Hell no. But it’s good enough - at least for me.
The Iconians fled, found lightsabres, and brought a few back. Now Starfleet and/or the Klingons are getting their grubby hands on them.
Problem solved… until I actually play the mission which has these things, in which case I’ll probably have to trash this entire thing.
